Parkrun when raining

Parkrun in the rain

My usual Saturday morning starts with the alarm going off and thinking it's Parkrun time again. Then with all the best intentions I get out of bed open the curtains look at how nice the weather is and decide if I want to go back to bed or actually leave the house.

Countless mornings I have decided against Parkrun due to rain or it looking cold.

This morning as I waited for my 10 minute snooze alarm to go off I thought I'm going no matter what. The sky was grey I could see the rustling of trees due to the high winds and it was just starting to rain.

I just got up and put on my trainers and went. This was Derby Parkrun my 43rd run and as I got to the start the rain started to fall over 500 runners stood there in the pouring rain waiting for the starting siren.

But guess what I was feeling happy and great that I made it and every one there seemed in more the good spirit for getting up on this cold and wet Saturday morning and going for it regardless of the weather.

The first 2.5k lap I got absolutely soaked and gave up trying to avoid the puddles.

I run cross country races so I'm used to wet feet and getting muddy so I just what the heck and went straight through any puddle that got in my way.

On the 2nd lap the rain stopped and the grey clouds parted. It was a lovely sunny morning behind all the dull grey, and as I came around the final bend for the finish straight I was glad that I had come out and run.

I saw a few friends who had also turned up to parkrun and we joked about the weather and that really rainy first lap. So my lesson taken from today's run is to not let the weather or excuses stop me from running and it's quite fun getting muddy and wet every now and then.
